Ponmudi ("Golden Peak" or "Golden Crown" in Malayalam) sits at roughly 1,100 metres in the Western Ghats, in the Peringamala area of Thiruvananthapuram district. The name is said to come from the golden hue the grassy hilltop takes on at sunrise and sunset — and unlike Kerala's better-known hill stations, it's close enough to the state capital to work as a genuine day trip.1,2
What Ponmudi offers isn't the scale of Munnar or the tea-estate grandeur of Vagamon — it's proximity, a still-uncrowded feel, and a butterfly-rich valley that draws serious naturalists as much as day-trippers. The adjoining Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary and the Agastyamalai Biosphere Reserve landscape further south give it real ecological depth beyond the viewpoint photo.
The Drive — 22 Bends, Five Vegetation Zones
The climb from Kallar, where the ghat road begins, to Ponmudi covers 22 hairpin bends (some sources count 23) — a genuinely dramatic ascent, even if you'll see the figure inflated elsewhere online.2,4,7 One traveller account describes passing through five distinct vegetation zones on the way up: coconut palms giving way to rubber plantations, then tall tropical forest, then tea, finally opening into hilltop grassland near the summit.7
🛣️ A Note on That "300 Bends" Claim
You may see some sources — including earlier versions of Kerala travel content — cite a much higher hairpin-bend count for Ponmudi. Every credible source we could verify, including Kerala Tourism's own listings, puts the figure at 22 (occasionally 23). We've corrected for that here.
The road is narrow and winds steeply in its final stretch, so it's not a route for a driver in a hurry — but that slowness is also what keeps Ponmudi from feeling overrun, even on a weekend.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary — The Ecological Backbone
Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, roughly 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram along the Ponmudi road, spans about 53 sq. km around the catchment of the Peppara Dam on the Karamana River, which supplies drinking water to the capital.5 Declared a sanctuary in 1983, the same year the dam was completed, it protects tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist mixed deciduous forest across an elevation range from around 100 m to over 1,700 m at its highest peak, Chemmunjimottai.5

The Kallar–Ponmudi Valley — A Genuine Endemism Hotspot
The Kallar-Ponmudi reserve forests are specifically named in Kerala's butterfly research literature as one of the state's richer sites for Lepidoptera, alongside Peppara, Wayanad and the Athirappilly-Vazhachal belt.8,9 The valley's best-documented resident is the Travancore evening brown (Parantirrhoea marshalli), a butterfly found nowhere outside the Western Ghats and specifically recorded from Etah-jungle habitat in the Kallar-Ponmudi valley during field surveys.9
🦋 About That "India's Largest Butterfly" Claim
The Southern birdwing (Troides minos), present in this region, has a wingspan up to 190 mm and is widely — and historically correctly — described as India's largest butterfly. More recent taxonomic work recognises the Golden birdwing of India's northeast as slightly larger (up to 194 mm), which makes the Southern birdwing the largest resident species in Kerala specifically, if not India as a whole. Either way, it's an extraordinary thing to see mid-flight.
December to May is generally the best window for butterfly activity in this part of Kerala, with a notable spike after the first summer showers in mid-April and again during the pre-monsoon month of May.8
